We are so fortunate to have an amazing roster of talented artisans this coming show.

So what can you expect to find at this Saturday's Yard Sale? A little of this and a little of that. I should probably re-phrase that to a lot of this and a lot of that. We've all got a stash to unload, here's a small sampling of mine . . .

Some of my stash includes 100 or so baby-toddler size organic cotton blank t-shirts for $3/each, a jeweler's soldering torch and tank, metal stamping supplies, adult t-shirt blanks and bags, vintage buttons, patterns, rubber stamping supplies, lots of vintage goodies (including glassware, purses, luggage, fabric), new fabric, frames, and more.

We are at it again, but this time with a different type of sale. We're finishing up our Spring Cleaning, and have found that we like to hoard our crafty supplies. Because we need to make room for the new, we will be having our first Handmade Revolution Yard Sale.

You'll find lots of craft and art supplies such as fabric, vintage items, t-shirts blanks, ribbons, stamps, and more. Stay tuned for some pictures. We are looking forward to seeing you next Saturday!

Spring Trunkshow Recap

It was yet another amazing gathering of friends and neighbors at our Third Annual Handmade Revolution Trunkshow. Once again we were back at the Yellow House on B, and it was pretty dang cool how so many people came out to celebrate the Summer-like day with us. It's been a long while since we did one of these, and felt good to convert the downstairs from living room to art event, and invite the neighborhood.

In their first appearance in Golden Hill, the folks at MIHO Gastrotruck joined us by parking out front and providing amazing locally sourced, handmade food for everyone. We're sorry to see the tasty fish sandwich from MIHO make it's final appearance on this day, but the pairing of locally hand-crafted arts and food could not have been a better match. Thanks MIHO for being there!

And a special thanks to all who helped spread the word about our little creative gathering. KPBS ran a great spot featuring the Trunkshow (go to 4:09 to hear it), Sezio.org gave us a kind shout-out, and we kept hearing from visitors throughout the day of other blogs, Twitter feeds and Facebook walls where people found out about us and our event. We were fellin' the love, for sure.

Emily Grace: This is odd...

I'm not feeling scrambled to get ready, for the first time since we've started doing these shows! In fact, I may be feeling a little too ready...

It seems that waiting so long between Trunk Shows puts me into production overdrive! In addition to the usual recycled plastic offerings, I've got pillows, purses, lots of new wallets, bibs, leather and stone jewelry, artwork, linoleum block print cards, and a handful of other things. But what I'm most excited to show you is this:

See that lovely lady on the left? That is Okello Esther, who is one of my favorite people on earth. And see that jewelry on the right? She and her friends made it out of paper. The best thing that's ever happened to me is that I've twice had the privilege to travel to Uganda and design jewelry for Ember Arts (formerly Acholi Beads) and work alongside Esther and 26 other equally wonderful women. Many of you have purchased this jewelry at previous Trunk Shows, and I want you all to know how much the support of people like you has changed their lives- for the better. Thank you.

I'm excited to show you their new work, share some paintings, see new and old faces, and of course, to visit MIHO for lunch.

Spring Inspiration From Colleen Townend Jewelry

As I sat peering out the front window early this morning sipping coffee, I was influenced by the beautiful colors of spring accenting the yards up and down our street. Although, anyone that knows me will know that spring is not my most favorite time of year. I enjoy it, but it is the precursor to summer, which is my very least favorite season. I, unlike most humans, prefer cloudy, damp chilly weather and today and yesterday have come through for me fabulously inspiring me to get busy cranking out pieces for our upcoming Spring Trunk Show.
These girls are precious and seem right at home nestled in these salvaged vintage treasures, wouldn't you just love to have one of these darlings hugging your neck this spring...?

Hard to believe it's been a YEAR since our last shindig! But folks, Spring is in the air, San Diego is blooming, the members of Handmade Revolution have been creating, and it's time for a Trunkshow! Once again we'll be at the Yellow House on B (2940 B Street, in Golden Hill), 11am-5pm. Drinks, tasty treats, and some lovely locally handmade creations await you. Parking will be even tighter than usual, as the Golden Hill Farmers Market will be in full swing. But hey, this is a walking neighborhood! Go park, and enjoy the walk! (Better yet, ride your bike), and check out the Farmers Market afterward, just a block away.

It's hard to believe our show is tomorrow!! As usual, I'm in a flurry to get everything done, surviving on little sleep and chocolate.

Yesterday while at a local bead store for some last minute supplies, I saw a local celeb., the beautiful and talented Gordana Gelhausen of Project Runway (my favorite show) Season 6! I couldn't help but say hello and slip her an invite for tomorrow's show, hope she stops by...

So Lindy has been super busy and covered in paint and not able to post any pictures herself, so I'm doing it for her. It's 3 am and I'm not sleeping anyway because I have too many ideas for the show flying around in my head, so I thought I'd take advantage of the quietness, make a few things for the show and do this post. Speaking of what's in my head, I wonder just how fantastic it must be to have a mind like Lindy and be able to conjure up such creative and fun art like this, lucky girl!

I'm posting just a few to get you interested, but I'm pretty sure if you come by the show on the 24th you'll find one that you'll just fall in love with. Thanks Lindy for sharing your amazing art with us!

How Sweet It Is

Since the last show, I've been busy in the kitchen testing and tasting all kinds of new desserts. My favorite part was the tasting, of course. I'm most excited about these decadent mini gems bursting with flavor and personality. Ever had French macarons? For those of you who have, you know what I'm talking about. Pure deliciousness. If you've never had them, you have to try them. Now. Soon. You won't regret it. I promise. I'm trying to decide which awesome flavors to include in the one dozen box.

So far, I love all of these flavors: toasted coconut, dark chocolate, madagascar vanilla, lemon, pistachio, raspberry, and mad russian coffee. But, I need to whittle that delish list down a bit.

I love chocolate, especially chocolate chip cookies. Yum. After dinner I am always craving something chocolate-y. The solution? Chocolate chip cookie dough at the ready. For those of you who love fresh baked cookies without the prep, mess, and hunting and gathering for ingredients, this is for you. Just pop 'em in the oven and a few minutes later, you have hot, fresh, homemade cookies! What could be better? Seriously.

One dozen chocolate chip mini cookies just waiting for you to pop them in the oven.

As I write this post, I have a batch in the oven. No kidding. The chocolate goodness is getting to me. I'm signing off now and I'm going to enjoy a batch. For real. I have other tasty treats that will be making their debut at the show. See you there. Bon Appetit! - 10xDesserts by Seana

More Recycled Coffee Bag Goodies ...

Since our Spring Trunk Show is just around the corner on April 24th, I've decided to whip up a bunch more stuff made from all these coffee bags I've been saving. It's amazing how much coffee we drink around here.

In case you don't already know this; the the airtight plastic/metallic bags that coffee is often packaged in is very carbon-intensive and totally un-recyclealbe and will last up to 500 years in a landfill. The plastic comes from petrochemicals, and the metallic components are often aluminum, one of the most energy intensive metals. So instead of tossing them, I save them and make cool stuff out of them.

I remain hopeful that one of these days Sbux will do the right thing and hire a company to develop more sustainable packaging for their product. But until that day, I'm going to continue to make purses, wallets and such out of them to save them from being in a landfill and contaminating the planet.

In this shot I have a purse, a few women's clutches, a guy's wallet, a checkbook cover and an eyeglass case. I'll probably think of a few more things to make with them that I'll be selling at the show. Oh, and if you're also a coffee addict like me and you have some of these bags that you don't want to toss, stop by on the 24th and I promise to make something useful out of them - Sophia Carolina

The weather is getting warmer every day and the ground is bursting with new life! It's time to get yourself some happy, sunny accessories to match the change in the weather, don't you think?

I got such a nice response to my fabric flower brooches and headbands at the last Handmade Revolution show that I got all inspired and have made some new ones! I've been tweaking the design a bit and am quite happy with the results.

Many of them will be available on my etsy shop this this week. (Hopefully I can post a few tomorrow while my little guy is napping!) I'm happy to make custom orders if there is a certain color/size you'd like to request. Just leave me a note in the comments section and I'll get in touch!

Colleen's button rings got some great press in the City Beat December Issue! Both in The Holiday Guide under "Buttoned Up" and then The Urban Scout mentions the great selection of Indie movies at Citizen Video in South Park where we have our boutique shop with our handmade items and gently used clothing. Right now we've got lots of great items for your holiday shopping, you should come check it out.

Holiday Trunk Show 2009

The Holiday Trunk Show yesterday was an amazing success! We wanted to thank all our loyal shoppers for coming out yesterday to support the The Handmade Revolution. And just in case you missed the show, this posting includes a great slide show of the day, and a special thank you goes to my talented husband, Jon who does all our marketing & photography.

We also have a couple other special mentions: super big thank you to Grants Market in Golden Hill for supplying the amazing selection of organic coffee for us. And another thank you to Seana Corona for providing the wonderful homemade baked goods and chocolates, so yummy!

This show we also had a couple of raffle drawings; two baskets valued about $100 each. A gentleman named Frank won the first one and the second went to Allison W. - Congrats to both lucky winners!

Hello everyone!

I'm going to be working exclusively in plastic grocery bags from here on out, so I'm melting and sewing furiously to get ready for the show on November 7th! Here are a couple of the things I'm working on:

I can't wait to see you! I'll also have a small gift for anyone who brings a generous amount of plastic shopping bags (especially colored ones) to donate to the recycling cause, then promises me to try and use fabric/reusable bags from here on out!

Fall Shows & Holiday Happenings ...

Tomorrow, Saturday October 3rd is the South Park Walkabout, it's a great way to get to know the neighborhood and shop local. Several of us have our handmade wares in Citizen Video at 2207 Fern St and also right next door at Junc Boutique & Gallery at 2205 Fern St (between 30th St & Ivy St) and our biggest presence is at the back part of the shop at The Daily Scoop Ice Cream Shop & Boutique at the corner of Fern & Juniper, we hope you can stop by for a visit.

Then on Saturday November 7th the entire Handmade Revolution will be participating in the McKinley Elementary School Fundraiser in South Park, last year this event was amazing. There were over 30 booths of handmade & vintage treasures to shop from. We'll be posting more info later this month, this year will be even more spectacular!

And on Saturday December 5th we will be hosting our 2nd Annual Holiday Trunk Show, this is one you won't want to miss! It's the perfect way to shop without the crowds all while supporting your local artists. And the best part, you'll be able to give a unique one-of-a-kind gift for the holidays.

For the last few years we've had the idea to do a series of tree paintings. And for some reason we finally got the bug to get moving on these. Here's a preview of what we will have available for sale this Saturday at the Old House Fair. All of these pieces are originals using a combination of handpainting and stencil art, many have been finished with a coat of resin. These range in size from 12" x 12" to 12" x 24" and will sell for $50.00 - $100.00. Drop by Saturday to pick one up.

First up, we'll be hosting a table to sell our wares at the McKinley Elementary School Carnival in South Park on May 30th, we'll post more details about the time once we have more info for you. For right now, just save the date.

Emily Grace Goodrich/Acholi Beads

Thanks to those of you that came to the trunk show! It was a lot of fun.

I've really appreciated being able to sell Acholi Beads at these shows. Although I don't make them myself, they are still handmade; by an incredibly talented group of women in Uganda.

I wanted to share two things with everybody. First, check out this video about the women who make the beads.

Second, I've had the opportunity to use some of the beads from broken or otherwise unsellable necklaces to make a few custom pieces for Acholi Beads. Since the beads themselves are made from recycled paper, these pieces are recycled at least twice over. The piece below even features a flower made from fused recycled grocery bags.

In case you missed our Spring 09 Trunkshow yesterday, here's a few photos from the day. Great seeing neighbors, old and new friends drop by. Some folks made off with some great Mother's Day gifts. Others found unique one of a kind treasures, while snacking on some slave-free chocolate brownies, veggies, fruits or delicious coffee (supplied by Grant's Market... thanks Grant's!). The Trunk Show yesterday was great! We had a mix of some faithful followers and a lot of new faces too. I feel so fortunate to be a part of such a talented group. We missed Rachel yesterday, hope you had a happy birthday!
The pendants I did of Lindy Ivey's artwork sold quickly so I'll be busy making more to be sold at Citizen Video in South Park. I'll be posting new pieces so keep checking in for that and details of our upcoming shows and events.

I've been working on lots of new jewelry made from pieces of vintage and broken costume jewelry. This is a way for me to explore different ways of incorporating recycling and more ethically and environmentally responsible manufacturing into my pieces.

I also hope to have some new recycled plastic bag jewelry ready for the trunk show. I've stumbled across a new way to use them and am finally able to make some pieces that I'm really proud of. Photos coming soon! If you have a growing pile of plastic grocery bags sitting around your house, I'd love for you to bring them on Saturday; I'll put them to good use!
